Newer to the violin, or coming back after a break? Start with a Fundamentals class - a relaxed way to give the violin a try. It leads into the Starter Violin Programme, and you'll progress up through Beginner and Intermediate from there.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Intermediate Course, or playing at approximately Grade 5+
Suggested commitment: 2+ years
Learners repeat this level across multiple terms as they work towards Grade 8 and Diploma-level playing. Progress at this stage develops gradually, and long-term study is expected.
We encourage learners to stay at the Advanced level for several years, allowing time for deeper musical refinement, confidence in higher positions, and consolidation of advanced techniques.

Introduction
Welcome to the Advanced Violin Course, a 10-week in-person programme designed for experienced learners who are ready to refine their musicianship at a higher level.
This course is ideal for players working from approximately Grade 5 towards Grade 8 and Diploma, and is intended to complement ongoing one-to-one lessons and ensemble participation. Throughout the term you will explore more sophisticated left-hand and bowing techniques, broaden your stylistic understanding, and build the skills needed to perform with confidence and artistry.
You'll also learn
- Advanced Violin Technique: Develop the physical and musical control required for more demanding repertoire.
- Reading & Interpretation: Strengthen your ability to interpret increasingly complex scores, including advanced rhythms, articulation and phrasing.
- How to Practise: Refine practice strategies to tackle technical challenges efficiently and maintain long-term progress.
- Performance Skills: Build confidence in expressing musical ideas and presenting polished performances.
Course Curriculum
In this 10-week course, you will explore a wide range of advanced material, including:
- Advanced shifting (positions 3-7 and beyond)
- Vibrato refinement and variation
- Double-stops and chord playing
- Advanced bow strokes (spiccato, sautillé, ricochet, martelé)
- Tone production and sound control
- Chromatic and modal scales
- Playing in higher positions with fluency
- Advanced intonation strategies
- Phrasing, articulation and stylistic interpretation
- Orchestral and chamber music techniques
- Confidence in preparing and performing longer repertoire
- Ensemble skills and part-playing
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for committed learners who have completed the Intermediate Violin Course or are playing at approximately Grade 5 level or higher (any exam board). Learners should be confident reading music, comfortable shifting between positions, and building experience with vibrato, double-stops and more complex bowing patterns.

Course Requirements
To join this course, you should:
- Have completed the Intermediate Violin Course, or be playing at around Grade 5 level or above
- Read music confidently
- Be comfortable with basic shifting, vibrato and double-stops
- Have your own violin and bow (a shoulder rest and music stand are also recommended)
This course is designed to complement, not replace, your ongoing individual lessons and ensemble music-making.
Course Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a record of achievement confirming that you have completed the Advanced Violin Course.
